steven cohen was born in 1962 in south africa and lives in lille, france. he is a visual and performance artist, staging interventions in the public realm and in gallery/theatre spaces, his work informed by his identity as a white south african jewish gay man. from 2003 to 2008 he was an associated artist of the ballet atlantique/régine chopinot in la rochelle, france, and in 2009 he undertook residencies at the mikhail baryshnikov art center and the center for performance research in new york. he has performed extensively internationally – in 2011 he presented his latest work, the cradle of humankind, at the centre pompidou as part of the paris autumn festival, and at festivals in geneva, warsaw, valenciennes, brussels and brest, among others. in 2010 he performed at the first aichi triennale in japan, and the bavarian state opera in munich. recent group exhibitions include no fashion, please: photography between gender and lifestyle at the vienna kunsthalle (2011); ars 11 at kiasma museum of contemporary art, helsinki (2011); dada south? at the south african national gallery, cape town (2009-10); andunder pain of death, austrian cultural forum, new york (2008).
